About Dr. Miles

Dr. Robert Miles, a surgeon since 1985, has practiced at St. Vincent's East in Birmingham, Alabama since 1990. Dr. Miles' interest in bariatric surgery increased in 2001 when he learned that bariatric surgery could be a surgical treatment or cure for diabetes. That same year, further research on bariatric surgery prompted him to begin performing the Roux en Y Gastric Bypass and he became first surgeon in Alabama to perform the Lap Band. The award-winning Surgical Weight Loss Program at St. Vincent's East was developed by Dr. Miles.

Education and Credentials

Dr. Robert Miles graduated from the University of Tennessee and attended Erlanger Medical Center in Chattanooga, Tennessee for both his Internship and Residency. He has served as President of the Medical Staff at St. Vincent's East in Birmingham, Alabama while practicing there as a bariatric surgeon. Dr. Miles is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and a Fellow of the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery.
